22 May 2025

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi, will later today, from 17:00 to 19:00, participate in a virtual Roundtable discussion themed “The Constitutional Commitment to Social Justice: A Constitution Review Conversation for a Reimagined South Africa”.

The details of this Roundtable Discussion are as follows:

Date: Thursday, 22 May 2025
Time: 17h00 -19h00

The event is organised by the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) at Stellenbosch University and forms part of the national discourse responding to Parliament’s invitation for submissions on the annual review of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996.

The Roundtable aims to assess the extent to which South Africa, both at a state and societal level, has embraced the constitutional vision of social justice.

It will bring together a diverse group of participants, including academics, policymakers, legal practitioners, judges, civil society representatives, and state-based researchers.

The conversation will focus on evaluating progress, identifying existing gaps, and considering whether there is a need to strengthen or clarify the constitutional commitment to social justice.

The outcomes of the discussion will inform a formal written submission to Parliament on the state of social justice in South Africa, along with a brief proposing actionable steps to accelerate progress in areas where it remains insufficient.

Notable participants expected to join the Roundtable include Professor Thuli Madonsela, Director of the Centre for Social Justice at Stellenbosch University; Justice Albie Sachs, retired Justice of the Constitutional Court; Ms Alex Motshwanetsi Mathole, V20 Sustainability Stream Lead; and Ms Maricia Froneman, Head of Access to Justice at the Thuli Madonsela Foundation.
